Has anyone told Blondi and Lynzie, the Gurning DJs, that
radio listeners cannot actually see their faces? Don’t worry - their typical
Egremont cheek got through on air
and helped us to enjoy
Egremont FM’s 28 day licence as an event worthy of the home of Crab Fair.
Appropriately, the voice of Don Mackay singing live at Crab Fair 2006 was
also heard on Egremont’s own wavelength.
They were only two of the DJs presenting an amazing range of music. Mark
Andrews (Mini) linked Egremont with cities all over the UK the USA, Sweden
and Italy when he played requests from Francis Dunnery’s worldwide fan club
who followed the show online. Egremont Today’s editor even had his
own favourite, "The only thing you get to keep is what you give away"
played good and early in the programme. Simon Brace, had a fantastic
Saturday morning show and our own Egremont man Mike Weir who played a wide
range of music combined with local news and weather and quite a few jokes.
Egremont fm was set up and run in Egremont Youth Centre and brought together
a large group of people from the Egremont area and beyond. Besides a wide
range of different music for all age groups, there were also many interviews
with local people and groups including Ted Wilson who organized Egremont’s
first ever arm-wrestling competition, Howgill Family Centre, who gave advice
on family issues, and The Miners Lamp Theatre Company who performed
"Blackout", a radio play written by Alan Butler, set in an air raid
shelter in 1943 with the voice of Lord Haw Haw identifying local figures in
Egremont and Moor Row.
One of the funniest things we had were radio jingles made
by local children. The jingles were so funny and we thank them so much for
taking part.
Unfortunately the radio came to an end on Sunday 11th
March, but you can always visit our website and listen to anything you may
have missed or download and listen to as MP3s. Our website is

All the Creative Egremont team of Karen Guthrie, Alison
