Copeland MP Jamie Reed has sought assurances from DEFRA and
the environment agency about the potential threat posed by the latest foot
and mouth outbreak to Cumbrian Farmers and the Cumbrian Economy. He said, "I have sought assurances concerning the likelihood of the latest outbreak spreading to Cumbria and, even without spreading, what effect this is likely to have upon Cumbrian Farmers and the Cumbrian economy now. I know from m yown friends and family that the south of England outbreak is already having an effect by stopping cattle movements. For many farm businesses, cattle movements equate to cash flow. Most small businesses will suffer -albeit temporarily - if cash flow stops or is significantly hampered. Potentially, we are all affected by foot and mouth disease. Painful memories of the last outbreak are still fresh in Cumbrian minds and over the past eighteen months the economy had started to strongly improve. There is no town and country divide in Cumbria, we are in this together and we must all be vigilant for signs of the disease and take every single necessary precaution. I have asked DEFRA and the EA to keep me informed of events as and when they occur. If anyone has any concerns relating to the latest outbreak they should call 0845 933 55 77 the DEFRA helpline." |
