Main Street at Play

The Main Street became Egremont’s playground on Friday evening and Saturday morning, ushering in all the fun of Crab Fair. On Friday evening Jason the Jester fascinated his young audience with his balloons, knives and bubbles and the traditional wheelbarrow race took place.  Crowds thronged around the stage erected by local scaffolders, A-Tech,  and fairground entertainment spilled over onto the street.

On Saturday, the horses appeared, ridden or led from the equitation events on the Sports Field, where Robyn Napier won three awards.  The Smiley Train again proved immensely popular, as did the parade of vintage vehicles and modern motor bikes.  Children walked in the Fancy Dress Parade and posed on stage, and the Morris Men added the colourful spectacle of their traditional dance.   Among groups raising funds for excellent causes were the Lions, the NSPCC and the Special Events Committee.  With impeccable timing, the Apple Cart appeared at 12.30, with Queen Lauren and helpers distributing the bounty of the season.  In the Parish Church Hall, there was an exhibition of local landscape painting and volunteers did a roaring trade in lunches
