If it had not been for the quick thinking of Joe Savage
an important building on the
Sellafield site could have burnt down.
Entering B241.2 he heard a crackling sound behind a plug. He quickly
summoned the building manager and an electrician. The power to the plug was
disconnected and faulty wiring repaired without difficulty and there was no
need to call the fire services, but if the problem had not been detected a
serious fire could have broken out within a few minutes.
Paula Evans, Joe’s line manager for Mitie, the cleaning contracting company
that employs him, was so impressed that she told Joan Saunders, the
company’s site manager of Joe’s prompt action. Together they recommended Joe
for the silver Impact Award, which Joe proudly shows our readers. In
addition, he has been awarded £250 of vouchers. Joe wishes to thank Paula,
Joan and all at B241.2 for recommending him. It shows what an impact an
alert worker can have.
It is not the first time that Joe’s keen eye and his sense of public
responsibility have prevented serious trouble. In December 2000 we reported
that he had noticed obstructions in Skitter Beck at a time of heavy rain.
Entering the water on a cold winter night, he cleared the course of the
stream and may well have saved bungalows on Church View from flooding. He
has also patiently gathered litter from various grot spots around the town,
and for this service was given Egremont Town Council’s first award for
Citizen of the Year. He continues to give an admirable example of public
service which we commend to others.
