Popular Egremont man Joe Savage has been further rewarded for his dedication at work.
Recently we told you that Joe, who was the first ever recipient of Egremont Town Council’s Citizen of the Year award, risked his own safety and helped prevent a serious fire when he was at work at Sellafield, where he is an operative for Mitie’s site maintenance service.
Initially Joe, who lives at Castle Croft, was given a Silver Impact Award by the firm, £250 worth of shopping vouchers and a certificate. But Joe has now been chosen to receive a Gold Impact Award – one of only four from Mitie’s 20,000 strong nationwide workforce.
He was whisked off to the Williams F1 centre in Oxfordshire for the awards dinner – where he was given a further £1,000 in shopping vouchers in recognition of his efforts. "It was the best weekend of my life – fantastic," Joe said.
Joe was cleaning in a building when he heard a crackling noise coming from a plug. He raised the alarm and then waited next to it until help came. The plug was just starting to spark and a fire was imminent - until Joe intervened.
An electrician cut the power to the plug and the faulty wiring was repaired without difficulty, but if the problem had not been detected a serious fire could have broken out within a few minutes.
"I’d like to think that anyone would do that, I did it without a second thought," Joe said. "But Mitie obviously felt it was a big deal, and what they’ve done to thank me has been great.
I’d like to thank my managers and the people at work who put me forward for the award."

Joe, whom many readers will recognise from his days as resident DJ in the Old Hall, has always had a keen community spirit. As we told you previously he prevented flooding by removing obstructions from Skitter Beck at a time of heavy rain in December 2000 by entering the water and clearing the course of the stream by removing debris.
He has also patiently gathered litter from various grot spots around the town, particularly the castle when it was in its worst state five years ago.
