After a gruelling weekend of grading and training at Millom two young members of Egremont Karate Club, 14 year old Ben Smith and 15 year old James Varah, have been awarded their 1st Dan Black Belts. Club instructor, Trevor Mossop, is justly proud that the little club he started five years ago for a handful of students to practise with a pair of spot pads and a kick shield has acquired a full range of equipment and has already produced two black belts.  Callum
Doran, Jordan Lowrey, Matthew Lancaster, Lewis Smith, Dominic McDonald and
Keiron Fraser were also successful in their gradings and Callum and Matthew,
in particular, may not be far behind. Ben and James are themselves an inspiring influence on the club, making other members aware of what is possible, and they play a full part in helping Trevor train younger members. They are also ambitious to develop their own combat skills and have recently returned from competitions in Manchester, performing creditably against much more experienced opponents. While working with a free enough rein to allow young members to have fun, Trevor demands discipline and is strict in demanding control and regard for safety and etiquette. Those practising Karate must respect one another and the authority of their instructor. Even more important, in his view, than the growing proficiency of his students in all branches of Free Style Karate, which includes Kick Boxing and Ju Jitsu, is the confidence that young children gain from membership of the club. This confidence even more than the self defence techniques they acquire reduces the risk of bullying "You have changed my children," he was told by one appreciative parent. It makes it all worthwhile.  Both
