Fast Track to Success

"I just like running." That was Tom Wright's rapid reply when asked what his favourite distance race was - and it mirrored his rapid performance in winning this year's junior section of the Crab fair multi-terrain 5K race. 11year old Tom who is in his second year at West Lakes Academy came second last year and this performance bodes well for the coming track season when he will be representing Seaton. Tom also runs for Cumberland Fell Runners and has just completed another successful season winning seven out of seven of his last fell races.

16 year old Sarah Hanabury put in a tremendous performance to win the Ladies section and come third overall in the junior section. And it was 16 year old Egremont's James Bowness who rounded off a hat trick of success for Copeland’s young guns, winning the main event in an impressive time of 20.12. He is no stranger to success, having represented England at Bath only three weeks ago where he came in 6th out of 12 in an international field in the 800m. The new season starts in the spring and James's hopes of continuing to build on his international success and winning international medals are definitely on track.
But it would be wrong to think that the event was all about youth. Veterans (over 45) Chris Knowles and Brian Thompson finished second and third respectively and a magnificent team of Ladies called St Bees Triers, among them supervet, Charm Robson, turned out in force in their bee coloured strip. The club meets at Seacroft House (Seacroft Drive, St. Bees) every Thursday at 7pm for a light-hearted training session and on Sundays for a long run.
