Dr Courtney Willey |

It is with great sadness that we heard of the death of Dr Courtney Willey in the early hours of 12th December 2004, at the age of 92 years. Egremont Town Council recognised his service to the community by presenting him with its Citizen of the Year Award last year. Long after he retired from his distinguished service as a Doctor at West Cumberland Hospital, indeed until the last few months of his life, he could be seen patiently picking up litter other folk had dropped and carrying it home for disposal. Such a patient example was absolutely typical of the dignity and humility with which he conducted his whole life. In the last year of his life he spoke to Egremont Today on three occasions, recalling his war time experiences serving as the sole medical officer at Tangmere Airbase in West Sussex when it came under attack from the Luftwaffe in a critical engagement in the Battle of Britain in August 1940, sharing his records of conditions in the Japanese Labour Camps in Burma, and remembering colleagues in the early years of West Cumberland Hospital. Rather than attempt the impossible task of paying an adequate tribute to his life we will let these records speak for him.
