It is a dream come
true for Labour’s
newly
adopted candidate for Copeland, Jamie Reed, to fight to represent the people
he grew up with, works with and knows. "What affects the people of
Copeland affects me and my family and that is why I am determined that we in
Copeland should not go back to the bad old days of Tory cuts and
unemployment that so damaged this area," he declared.
"From this moment on I will be doing everything in my power to make sure
that the progress we have made in Copeland, in terms of a record fall in
unemployment, a decent wage for all & record investment in our public
services including in our education & health services is not wrecked by the
same old Tories," he told Egremont Today. Mocking the same old
Tories who have committed themselves under Michael Howard to over £35bn
worth of cuts in our public services, he pointed out that even if they
sacked every GP, every teacher, and every police officer in the country they
would still be struggling to reach their targets. "That is the danger for
the country and for Copeland, to go back to the days of cuts, low pay and
unemployment."
Drawing on his intimate knowledge of the Nuclear Industry from his
employment as a press officer at Sellafield, he looked forward confidently
to the challenges ahead, with a world class workforce skilled in the nuclear
industry that we can market internationally.
"We
must continue to support this workforce and broaden our economic base to
provide jobs and wealth for hard working families and children in the
future."
A former student at Whitehaven school before attending university at
Manchester, where he graduated with BA and then Leicester, where he gained a
Master’s degree, he is looking forward to bringing everyone together to make
sure that the fully equipped acute hospital and University already promised
provide the health needs and education opportunities that Copeland needs,
and to fight for the investment in our roads and rail links our region
needs.
Above, he and Jack Cunningham welcome Government Chief Whip to Whitehaven.
Left, he congratulates Copeland Council Leader, Elaine Woodburn, on
presenting a Budget which delivers improved services at very little extra
cost to local tax payers.
