Release National Nuclear Lab for Sellafield
West Cumbria to become international centre of nuclear excellence Copeland's Labour MP Jamie Reed has welcomed today's announcement by the Secretary of State for Trade & Industry committing to the establishment of the National Nuclear Laboratory at Sellafield. Jamie Reed said: "I have worked extremely hard on making the case for the laboratory for some time with both Number 10 and the DTI and I'm delighted that logic has prevailed. There was significant national competition for this facility and this is a very real victory for West Cumbria. "The establishment of the NNL at Sellafield is a significant step in establishing West Cumbria as the international centre of excellence for the nuclear industry. In addition it sends out the crucial signal to all of those non-UK companies seeking to operate in the UK market that West Cumbria is the centre of the British nuclear industry. "The NNL will safeguard the key nuclear skills needed in the UK as we progress with advanced clean-up and new build. This will enable West Cumbria to capitalise upon our unique nuclear expertise whilst also providing our economy with significant opportunities to diversify into other areas of high-end science and engineering. "This is another vital component in the long term regeneration of West Cumbria. Alongside the development of a new academy school, the University of Cumbria and the increased UcLan presence at Westlakes there is a clear momentum building around our ambitions as a community. In addition to this, I expect the government to soon commit to the Nuclear Skills Academy based around the Westlakes College at Lillyhall. "Today's announcement not only underpins highly-skilled well paid jobs in West Cumbria, but will also create new ones. I will now be working with Nexia Solutions, the NDA and government on implementing today's decision as soon as possible." Ends
