Inside Our July Issue

The Ties That Bind Us Are Stronger than Ever

As crowds gathered in silence around War memorials across West Cumbria it marked the beginning of a long journey of recovery for our shattered communities. In just a few hours on the 2nd June one man caused more devastation to our lives than any of us thought possible, and for those of us locked in our homes we had the surreal experience of watching those horrific events happening on our doorsteps, unfold and be played out live on TV.....

We must try to move on
says Brian Simpson

Help the healing to begin
says Jamie Reed

This is probably one of the worst years we have ever encountered in Cumbria and in particular West Cumbria for many a generation. Floods and tragic road accidents are bad enough, but even they, as tragic as they were, were surpassed ...

There are no words to describe the events of June 2nd. As I stare at this page - hours after beginning - these are the first words I have written...

PC Jenna's role prepared her for this

Joyful singers remember Susan

The discipline of her training as a police office does not allow PC Jenna Birbeck to speak in detail about her own service on 2nd June 2010. She was a member of a strong and supportive team challenged by the needs of a community in deep shock, distress and danger...

In Memory

"How about a bit of gentle fell walking”, Mike said, having seen me in the garden one day – “but nothing too strenuous”, he added, “I’m trying to strengthen this knee that’s giving me trouble”.  ....

Jennifer and Jimmy Jackson couldn’t have been more different from each other. Jennifer was a quiet, serene lady while Jimmy was much more extrovert – but this worked well for them as a couple. They led busy lives from their home at Stock Bridge in Wilton....

How the horror show unfolded

Anne sheds her locks for Rosehill

Copeland will never quite be the same again, following the events of Wednesday, June 2nd.
I was safely tucked up in bed – off work ill – when the news started to filter through and I received a call from a relative warning me not to go out of the house...

Anne Bradshaw receives a consolatory kiss from Mayor of Copeland, Michael McVeigh having shed her locks for a good cause. Having had her head shaved in public at Rosehill Theatre, she has already raised nearly £1000 for the Rosehill Development Fund through the generosity of sponsors

What's black and white and read all over?

"I’ve never seen so many Egremont Todays being read in one place!” exclaimed an amazed Peter Watson as he stood outside the Tate Britain in London watching hundreds of people coming and going, clutching a copy of our own little newspaper.
We had been invited, along with local band, MT Arms to be part of an exhibition hosted by Grizedale Arts to represent our area.
After Wednesday’s horrific shootings we felt unsure if the event should happen at all. We all agreed that it would be dedicated to those killed and injured....
